Happy Birthday, Walt Whitman!

Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God,have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown,or to any man or number of men,go freely with powerful uneducated persons, and with the young, and with the mothers or families,re-examine all you have been told in school or church or in any book, and dismiss whatever insults your own soul;and your very flesh shall be a great poem…. ~ Walt Whitman ~ (from the Preface to Leaves of Grass, 1855 edition)

A good book should leave you… slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it.

I’ve been craving going kayaking lately. Definitely need to make that happen some time soon.

Art’s great nudes have gone skinny

Italian artist Anna Utopia Giordano has created a visual re-imagination of historic nude paintings, had the subjects conformed their bodies to what the 21st century considers an ideal of beauty. The results are revealing—and quite shocking in what they say about the modern attitude toward women’s bodies.

Fuck me, I love Bronzino’s ‘Allegory of Love’. It’s so filthy! Just LOOK at cupid, slipping his mother the tongue and groping her breast as he offers up his arse for our voyeuristic gaze!…actually, I love most of these paintings. Of course, seeing them all rendered in anorexic photoshop style is about as weird and unlovely as seeing Keira Knightly cast as Elizabeth Bennet. ( sorry, Keira! I like your work, but I couldn’t help boggling over how totally anachronistic your body type is for that role. It didn’t bother me amidst the rest of the whacky fantasy highjinks of the Big Gay Pirate movies, but for Austen it just felt weird.)

My inner old soul/book nerd is really excited about this movie. I love the Robert Redford version and it’s been one of my favorite books ever since it was forced on my freshman year English class. I’m in love with the time period and I think Baz Luhrmann will treat it well.

Whenever I see an old book my immediate reaction is to sniff it. I can’t relate to people who don’t appreciate the olfactory ecstasy tucked inside the pages of an aged piece of literature.

Dear Life, Please fast forward to the point when I’m a Girl Scout Leader. That’s honestly what I want more than anything else. To give back to the organization that gave me everything, that made me who I am today. I knew I would miss it, but I never could have imagined how much.

AMAZING :)
